This past May a very important and special event occurred over our nations capitol, one that may never happen again. On May 8th, 1945 WWII in Germany ended with the German surrender. This was the day in which the actual document was signed in France. It was known afterward as Victory Europe or VE Day. Seventy years later, thanks to the help of several organizations, 52 aircraft flew over the National Mall to honor veterans of all branches. Fifteen flights of aircraft flew in formation to mark the many battles that were fought. I had the great privilege that week to photograph the event. I was hired by the Texas Flying Legends Museum to cover the whole week and then turn it into a final show piece so that others could enjoy and relive their aviation heritage. This is something that I have been working on all summer and I can now finally talk about it. It’s been one heck of an experience creating an entire book for the first time and I’m quite pleased with the results.
To give you some idea of what this trip was like, what went into it and the impact that it had, here is a short 2 minute video that sums it up. However, if you want the full story then you have to buy the book.
The book is $159.99 plus shipping. It’s a 13×11 138pg coffee table book that tells the story of our travels across a dozen states and with aircraft that literally came from all over the country. While the book includes a lot of photographs, it is not in any way a how to photography book. This book is meant to inspire, educate and be worth something to talk about with others. The book includes everything from photography, to the people, the flying that was involved and of course the veterans. Now I’m doing something very special with this book in the hopes that it will inspire and help others. For every book that is sold 1/3 of the profits are going to the Texas Flying Legends Museum and another 1/3 is going to the Commemorative Air Force. Without nonprofit institutions like these a lot of our flying heritage wouldn’t exist and this is my way of being able to give back so that way we can keep the planes flying.
